What is in a name?

I am partial to Galactosemia Group Midwest. What do others think?

I think that name is totally fine. However, I still think that we need to have Nish check with PGC to make sure that all is OK if we totally separate from them by name.

I don't think that it will matter to PGC what our name is as long as it is not the same as theirs. My only reason to have our own name is to not have any problems in the future like Jo Beth is experiencing.
The group name I came up with was Midwest Galactosemia Group.

Midwest Galactosemia Group. That's right. I change my vote. :)

Separating by name is fine as long as the bylaws say this is under the umbrella of PGC. I sent an email out to see if we can use the name PGC Midwest.

Clarifying what the PGC bylaws say in regards to the regional groups and their names is important. We're ok with any of the names mentioned, Galactosemia Midwest or Midwest Galactosemia Group. The Minnesota group is called Galactosemic Families of Minnesota (GFMN)so our name would differ. Having a 21 year galactosemic makes you think about the name PGC. She said that several of the teens were talking about why the name of the organization was about the parents. When we joined PGC about 19 years ago, there were very few adults which is slowly changing and great to see.

As an adult galactosemic I can see why the PGC uses that name and I do not mind that it is used that way. I am just glad that there are groups out there to help us. I have always (ever since I found the PGC, which was only 6-7 years ago and I was already in my mid 20's) seen the PGC as a group for families and not just parents. If it was only for parents I would not be too happy but, the PGC includes the whole family.

Re: the name----I wanted to clarify a few things. First, we were checking with PGC to see if we COULD use PGC-Midwest or something so that we WERE somehow affilated with them so if we did fundraising people wouldn't be confused why they were writing a check to a completely different organization. Technically PGC has no say in how we organize or what we call ourselves if we are becoming our own legal entity (incorporated). However, I think we all agreed we WANT to be an arm of PGC---we WANT to be part of the larger group and put our efforts with everyone else's around the country. Also, why do the by-laws need to say we are under the umbrella of PGC?--not sure I follow or agree with that. Another name possibility is GAM Galactosemia Association of the Midwest.

I love GAM. I am all about acronyms-easy to remember!!!

Do you think GAM would be too much like GANES? They are Galactosemia Association of the North Eastern States. I do like the idea of an acronym.

Try as I might, I cannot come up with any other acronyms. Maybe after a few more cups of coffee, you know, to really jump start the brain.

I change my vote again... GAM :)
